"...The Milwaukee-based company said its net income fell 82% in its fiscal fourth quarter to $8.3 million, compared with a year earlier. Earnings per share were 5 cents, down from 27 cents a year earlier. "
That's really bad. Hope they don't go down the tubes.

As was already discussed before, motorcycling (as hobby) is on decline in the States. Plus higher prices of HD bikes don't help them too. But according to the article, reducing the cost will hurt the profitability which make them harder to survive...
Reducing prices is just a patch, however one major way out, is for government to step in and to acknowledge it. Acknowledge and promote the use of bikes to rider's advantage.

Such as:
No tolls (or at least drastically reduced) tolls for bikes (as it's done in some countries).
Allow to split lanes for faster commute, or at the least dedicate moto lanes during rush hours.
Allow parking on sidewalks or make dedicated moto parking spots throughout.
Allow to ride thru on a bike where it can be restricted for cars...

This will boost moto industry bigly (as Trump would say Smile), however I will agree that bike accidents may rise since many new and inexperienced riders will fill the ranks. This can be addressed as well by making staged licensing, and strict training involving real street riding and tests instead of just two days course on a parking lot...

I know it's sounds utopian, but in my view makes lots of sense.
To make it real, someone up there should care.

But while bikes are going to be viewed as toys, the industry will continue to be in jeopardy.

HD has other ideas, as to what will regain their market share: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-01-30/harley-davidson-is-making-an-electric-motorcycle-after-livewire

I think it does make sense. The hard-core Harley riders (a-la sons of anarchy) slowly disappearing, as well as the white-color baby boomers getting old, so the new market is aimed to millennials (Starbucks generation).
Interesting to watch how the biking industry will evolve.

Good luck to them with it.
Even without test-riding it, I still choose the Wing

I'm just trying to understand where are these prices came from? What's so sophisticated to justify this?

Sophisticated? Harley? Laughing
As far as price, HD has always been overpriced. $43k is more of a custom one-of-a-kind type of a territory, not mass production.
American auto manufacturers eventually had to realize some years ago - Japanese cars are cheaper and better. If you want to compete, you better improve fast, lower your prices or perish.
On the other hand there is Rolex, that produces 100's of thousands of watches and still manage to charge upwards of $6k each

So you saying that 43k Harley is equivalent to north of 6k Rolex?
Not sophisticated, overpriced expansive, but has name and heritage?
Just asking. Haven't owned neither.

Yes, yes and yes. Three of the (many more) reasons why I will not purchase either brand

Rolex is a status item, you buy it to feel that you belong to the "Rich and Famous' club. Harley is almost there, too.
Unfortunately, motorcycles as we know it them will be solely hobby thingies, like skis, snowmobiles, squads and jet-skis. We'll try to enjoy bikes till we can but I don't see any future for the motorcycles as a means of transportation.
Scooters in the overcrowded cities might survive, though but not the big touring bikes.

I wonder what's gonna happen when modern MC clubs will revisit the rule about "Must ride Harley" rule in their Bylaws.
